Make sure you cater for what the customer wants. However, the customer is not always right and may need a gentle suggestion of something which you could do to retain professional workmanship and also adhere to the customers requests.
Have a long term plan and make sure that everything you do and decisions you make all work towards your goal.
Don't be affraid to contact customers and companies as they may not need your services straight away but if you leave them with a good experience and a professional approach they will either contact you in the future or pass your details on.
